Volunteer: Wish Granting Volunteer Opportunity (Bilingual & English)

Volunteers are the heart of our mission! Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. From our humble beginnings with one boy’s wish to be a police officer, we have evolved to be one of the world’s leading children’s charities, serving children in every community in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donors and nearly 40,000 volunteers, Make-A-Wish grants a wish somewhere in the country every 34 minutes. Wish Granters work with families over the course of 12-18 months volunteering about an hour a month per wish child. Wish granters are trained individuals who meet with our children to determine their wish. These volunteers work closely with the Make-A-Wish staff to make each wish come true.Wish granters will have the opportunity to meet with wish families virtually (FaceTime, Zoom Meetings, HouseParty, Phone Calls, etc.) or in person.Wishes can be granted in just several days or may take up to a year to complete.A specialized training program is provided before contact is made with a wish family. We serve a large percentage of Spanish speaking with families, and without Spanish speaking wish granters, we are not able to quickly meet the needs of those Spanish speaking families. If you are fluent in both English and Spanish, please consider becoming a wish granter.

Volunteer: Sponsor a Cottage Meal at the Children’s Home

Our campus is home to group residential cottages where children live and are cared for 24/7 by dedicated Houseparent's.

Preparing meals for a large group three times a day is no small task, and a shared meal can mean more than just nourishment—it creates space for rest, connection, and relationship-building.

You can make a meaningful difference by providing a meal, dessert, or restaurant gift card. Your generosity gives our Houseparent's a much-needed break and allows them to focus more fully on the children in their care.

How You Can Help

1. Cook in Our Kitchen - Use our newly renovated kitchen to prepare a meal onsite with your own ingredients.

2. Bring a Fully Prepared Meal - Drop off a ready-to-serve meal for the children and Houseparent's to enjoy together.

3. Sponsor a Cottage Meal Experience - Deliver a meal directly to a cottage so families can eat together in their home or invite a cottage to dine with your group in our shared dining area.

Timing & Availability

Volunteers may arrive as early as 4:00 PM Dinner is typically served between 5:30–6:00 PM

Meals can be scheduled any night of the week (Thursdays & Fridays work best).

If you’d like to bless one of our cottages with a meal, we would love to hear from you. Thank you for helping create moments of rest, connection, and care.

Volunteer: Volunteer Mentors Needed

Who Mentored You?

We all had someone in our lives who was in our corner—a cheerleader, a guide, someone who believed in us even when we didn’t fully believe in ourselves. For some of us, it was a teacher, a counselor, a youth group leader, a friend, a parent, or a grandparent. These people showed up, listened, and cared—and having that support made all the difference.

You have the power to be that person for one of our students. By simply showing up and being a listening ear, you can help guide, encourage, and inspire a young person—making a real impact on their life. You don’t need special skills—just a willingness to care. Your support could be the difference that helps them thrive

Why Become a CYD Mentor?

By volunteering, you’ll have the chance to build a meaningful connection with a young person, instill confidence, and empower them to reach their full potential. It's a rewarding experience where you not only make a difference in their lives but also grow personally!

Meeting Dates: 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month, from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

Location: YWCA of Lubbock, 6501 University Ave.

Who We're Looking For:

We’re looking for individuals who are patient, compassionate, and dependable—someone who truly cares about making a positive impact. While prior experience with children or teens is helpful, it’s not required. If you’re eager to support and guide a young person, we’d love to have you!

What You’ll Get:

Comprehensive training and materials for each mentoring session

Ongoing support to ensure you and your mentee have a successful and fulfilling relationship

The joy of transforming lives and building a stronger community

Volunteer: Children's Storytime Reader Volunteer

Tiny Tots is a storytime event designed for children under age 5 and their parents. Every week, families receive one new book after it has been read aloud. The children enjoy singing songs and discussing the story. Tiny Tots is held at two locations—Groves Library and Godeke Library—every Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30.

Storytime is a vital part of early childhood development. It plays a key role in nurturing language skills, imagination, creativity, and cognitive abilities by introducing children to new vocabulary, sentence structures, and narrative concepts. Additionally, it helps enhance listening skills and concentration as children actively engage with stories. Storytime lays a strong foundation for literacy and communication skills, which are crucial for future learning and success.

Volunteer: Meals on Wheels Drivers needed!

Volunteer Drivers

Volunteer drivers, both regular and substitute, are needed each weekday to deliver meals. You do not need to commit to a set schedule to volunteer for LMOW. Some drivers prefer to take the same route on the same day each week whereas others prefer to just substitute when needed. For many of our clients, the LMOW volunteer may be the only person they see during the day. That daily human contact is just as important as the nutritious meal they are receiving. Each route takes approximately 1 hour to deliver. Most routes have 10 – 16 clients. A background check and one hour orientation is required for all delivery volunteers.

If you would like to try us out first, we can pair you up with one of our volunteers for a ‘ride-along’.  Just give us a call at (806)792-7971.

Delivery volunteer opportunities are available from 10:45 am – Noon, Monday – Friday.  Non-delivery volunteer opportunities are available throughout the day Monday through Friday.

If you would like to volunteer, give us a call at 806-792-7971, or
you may fill out our Volunteer Application Form online: https://lubbockmealsonwheels.org/volunteer/apply/

PLEASE BE SURE TO COME BACK HERE AND LOG YOUR HOURS!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

In-House Cleaning: (Individuals or Group)

Ronald McDonald House is just that – a HOUSE.  We run much like your very own household…only time 17 because that’s how many rooms we have. We need volunteers to help with light household cleaning, organizing closets, separating donations, putting them away, and much more.  This is a great individual or group opportunity for volunteers of all ages.

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms: (Individuals or Pairs)

Family Rooms are mini–Ronald McDonald Houses and offer all families (local and out-of-town) the opportunity to take a break from the stressful hospital environment.  Families are encouraged to come to the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and enjoy a warm, comfortable setting where they can relax and get something to eat or drink.  Volunteers are required to commit to a regular volunteer schedule and incur additional training.  This opportunity does require the volunteer to step up.  Our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are staffed 100% by our volunteers.  When a shift is not covered, then we are forced to close the doors, thus denying families the services we provide.

Handy Person: (Individual or Group)

Are you a Mr. or Ms. Fix-it?  Then we need you!  Volunteers are asked to do light house maintenance.  This could be anything from changing lightbulbs to fixing a loose cabinet hinge. This can be on-call or prescheduled maintenance as needed.

Office Assistant: (Individual or Pairs)

These volunteers can commit to a scheduled or on-call service.  Some of the duties of a receptionist are to answer phones, open the door, do light housekeeping when needed, and inventory rooms of families checking out of the Ronald McDonald House. Depending on the volunteer’s interests and the needs of the Ronald McDonald House, other duties will also be requested of these volunteers.

Baking Buddies: (Individual or Group)

If you love to bake, we would love to have you use your talents in our kitchen!  There is nothing more “home-like” than the smell of freshly baked cookies.  This is a wonderful and fun way to incorporate children into the volunteer experience.

Guest Chef: (Individual or Group)

Guest Chefs help to feed the families at the Ronald McDonald House.  Schedule the meal, and bring the ingredients to our beautiful, warm kitchen, and cook the dinner together as a group!  We have four ovens, two cooktops, two microwaves, and lots of pots and pans to make cooking a snap!

Freezer Friends: (Individual or Group)

Freezer Friends help to fill our casserole freezer to feed our families when we do not have a guest chef provided.  Bring the ingredients and schedule a time to prepare the casseroles in our beautiful kitchen – or simply donate a store-bought casserole!

Donation Drivers: (Individual)

The Ronald McDonald House has vehicles that are used for transporting families to/from the hospital, going to pick up supplies, taking families for scheduled trips to Wal-Mart or a grocery store, etc. Drivers sign up for scheduled shifts and/or let us know when they are available for on-call needs to serve as a substitute for the scheduled driver.  You must be 21 years or older and have a good driving record.

Of course, you could primarily do mainly one of these jobs or sample all of them until you find what makes you happiest.  If you don’t see a job that appeals to your desires, then talk to the Programs Coordinator so we can find something that best utilizes your talents. [ emma@rmhcsouthwest ]

Of course, you could primarily do mainly one of these jobs or sample all of them until you find what makes you happiest.  If you don’t see a job that appeals to your desires, then talk to the Programs Coordinator so we can find something that best utilizes your talents. [ emma@rmhcsouthwest ]

Volunteer: Groups to Provide Evening Meals

We Need Your Help! During this time we have had to take necessary precautions to protect our clients' health and safety. For the time being we will not be able to allow groups to serve on campus. Because of this, our need for meals for our clients has greatly increased.  We are always in need of meals donated for our clients! Even dropping off sandwich meat and bread will help tremendously! Meals are served in the barn every evening around 6pm to approximately 85 residents. For more information, Respond to this Need or click here to sign up for a meal.  **PLEASE do not prepare food if you are sick or even think you might possibly be coming down with something (we would rather you cancel last minute).
