Volunteer: Meal delivery to the homebound, elderly or disabled

MEAL DELIVERY:  If you are looking for a warm, fuzzy feeling try delivering meals to the homebound, elderly or disabled of our community; it only takes about an hour.  There are approximately 12 to 15 meals per route. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday, but you can deliver as often or as little as you would like; once a week, once a month, substitute or permanent.

A brief orientation is required and you may complete your volunteer forms at lubbockmealsonwheels.org.

Sometimes our volunteers are the only people our clients see.  Your visit is much more than just a meal, it is a friendly face checking on someone in need.  Join our volunteer family and make a difference.

Volunteer: Become a Big Brother or a Big Sister!

We are still matching during this time!

Do you want to make a lasting impact on a child's life while having fun? Become a "Big" with Big Brothers Big Sisters! Our program currently has over 60 children that are waiting to be matched with a volunteer. Have any questions? Check out our FAQ below or give us a call!

FAQ:

What do "Bigs" do?- Bigs will be matched with a child who enjoys doing similar activities as them. The Big will then plan outings with their Little based on their interests. Do you love to play soccer? Take your Little to the park and teach them how to play! Do you love to read? Go to the library and start a mini-book club. The possibilities are endless. What is the time commitment?- Our volunteers are asked to spend 1-2 hours a week with their Little for at least 12-18 months. Why such a big commitment? Research has shown that our program can make LASTING impacts when the children are matched with their big for at least 12-18 months after the enrollment process What if I miss a week? That's ok! You will be in charge of setting up your schedule. If you go out of town for a week, maybe you can make up that time the next week. However, we ask that our volunteers try their best to see their Little at least once a week. Do I have to spend a lot of money? No! We actually encourage our volunteers to seek out low to no-cost activities. Don't worry though, you are not alone! We provide a monthly newsletter to all our volunteers with a list of low to no-cost activities going on in the community that month. We also provide at least one free activity a month that you are invited to attend. Click Respond for more information on becoming a "Big" *Please include your phone number and email address in the Notes section. We look forward to having you as a volunteer!

Volunteer: Join as a Literacy Lubbock tutor and provide assistance to individuals whose first language is not English.

Are you passionate about helping people? Are you interested in facilitating connections within our community? Are you driven to support your neighbors?

Our ESL program is bustling with non-native English speakers eager to learn the language, and they're seeking your assistance! This volunteer opportunity offers complete flexibility: you can opt for one-on-one tutoring or assist a teacher in the classroom.

If you choose the one-on-one approach, you and your student can arrange your schedule and meeting place according to your preferences.

Alternatively, if you opt for the classroom setting, we offer various days, times, and locations to accommodate your availability.

We supply all necessary curriculum and materials, along with available training, to ensure you're fully equipped to positively impact your student, their family, and the community!

We'd love to connect with you if you're keen on fostering connectedness, independence, and hope!

About Literacy Lubbock:

Our 35-year mission is straightforward: to develop and implement programs that promote literacy. We firmly believe that education and literacy levels underpin many contemporary challenges. Literacy significantly influences a wide array of socioeconomic issues, including incarceration rates, health outcomes, employment opportunities, and poverty levels. We are convinced that the most effective pathway to improving one's circumstances is through education, and we advocate for making this journey accessible, available, and free to all who seek it.

At Literacy Lubbock, we are dedicated to transforming lives and contributing to improving our world through the individuals within our community. We recognize that knowledge is power and are committed to disseminating it far and wide.

Volunteer: Assist in tutoring an adult as they embark on their journey of learning to read for the first time!

If you're reading this, you're doing better than 13% of our community.  Sadly, 1 out of every 8 people living in Lubbock County are illiterate.  But you can help!

We're on the lookout for ABE (adult basic education) volunteers to help teach our adult students how to read!  You'll be working one-on-one with a singular student to help them learn how to read.  Whether they've never learned before or have dsylexic tendencies that have prevented them from getting it, we have specialized curriculum to help.

This opportunity is entirely flexible: you'll work with your student to set your own schedule.  Only want to meet once a week?  Done.  Want to meet up at a local Starbucks that's close to both of you?  Done.  You take the reigns and figure out a pace that works with you and your student.  And we provide all the support you'll need!

In today's world, reading is paramount.  From text messages to articles, from social media to newspapers, people need to read.  And you can help them achieve that goal.

About Literacy Lubbock:

Literacy Lubbock was established in 1989 as a local nonprofit dedicated to helping adults learn how to read.  Since then, we've helped more than 7,000 people in the Hub City learn how to read, get their GED, or learn English as a second language and we've distributed more than 50,000 children's books.   Our mission and goal is simple: to support and execute programs that enable people to become literate.

Because at the end of the day, we believe education and literacy levels are the root cause for a lot of today's problems.  Literacy has a weighty impact on nearly every socio-economic issue plaguing us today, from prison rates, health, employment, poverty levels, and so on.  The surest way for a person to improve their circumstances is by improving their education, and we believe that journey should be accessible, available, and free to any who want it.

Literacy Lubbock is about changing lives and making our world a better place through the people who live here.  Knowledge is power.  And we're determined to share it.
